September 14- October 2

Please remember that your child needs a 12" X 12" piece of cardboard to create their salt dough map of Arizona.  Students need to bring in their cardboard by Monday 9/21 so that we have time to get Arizona traced on them.  Students will then use them during class Tues.-Thurs. labeling them.

FRIDAY SEPT. 25  we will be making our salt dough maps!  If you offered to make/bring in dough, please send it with your child to school Wed. Sept. 23.  Keep the dough refrigerated over night as it will spoil!

If you would like to volunteer and help our class make their salt dough maps, everyone is welcome!  Our class will be making them on Friday Sept. 25 from 10:45am-11:20am. Please feel free to email me and let me know if you are able to make it!

Language Arts:
  • Book bags will continue to go home each week.  They are expected to return on Thursday will all the books and sight words if your child has them.  PLEASE have your child use a book bag book to complete his/her Reading Log each week.
  • We will continue to work on beginning and ending blends with 2-3 letters for phonics and spelling.
  • Students will begin to make thoughtful connections to stories they are reading.  Students can make connections to events happening in the book or the way a character feels.  We will begin showing how we write and talk about those connections independently, in small groups, and whole class.
  • Students will continue to work on using correct language conventions consistently as well as begin their first personal narrative (small moment). They will go through the writing process and in time, publish their work on the computer.

Math
  • Students will work on showing numbers in various ways (pictures, base 10 blocks, standard form, word form, and expanded form)
  • Identify the value of each digit in 3 and 4 digit numbers
  • Solve addition and subtraction word problems using different strategies and begin to explain their thinking, step by step, in writing.
  • We will begin our Geometry unit closer to the end of September

Social Studies
  • We will finish up our geography unit with Arizona salt dough maps
  • Compare and contrast urban and rural environments
  • Identify our mayor, governor, and president

Please be sure to check your child's folder located in their binder each night.  Papers in the folder are graded that may or may not need to be corrected and returned.  Important notes from the office are also located in there too.

Welcome 2nd Grade Families!

This is our class blog where I will keep everyone up to date on current events, what is happening in the classroom, and links to helpful websites to use at home!

We had a great first day!  Students are starting to learn routines and procedures, our classroom rules, and become independent.  Students have set up their binders which will go to and from school each day.  The first pocket of their binder will always be their homework for the night.  They also have a planner where they will record their homework every night, and a folder.  It is important to check their folder each night and empty it.  Graded work, work that needs to be corrected, and any notes or fliers from school will be in them.

Students should have gone over their blue "Plan for Success" with you.  Students will take a plan home this week and next.  After the end of next week, only students who are struggling to follow our Coyote Code will receive a plan. I will mark the character pillar they struggled with and a brief explanation of the incident.  Please be sure to sign the plan that night and discuss with your child what happened.

I am looking forward to a wonderful school year!

Dear Parents,

Just wanted to remind you that Friday March 27 will be my last day before going on maternity leave as I am due Monday March 30. When students return from spring break, Hilary Woodhams, will officially take over until the end of the year.

Hilary Woodhams has been student teaching in a second grade classroom at Sunrise Drive Elementary and is familiar with our district's standards and expectations.  Hilary is currently working on a letter introducing herself and it will also provide you with her email address so that you can contact her with any concerns or questions.  This letter will be sent home at the end of this week or beginning of next week.  Although I will be on maternity leave, I will still be informed on what is happening in the classroom and take part in big decisions that are made such as behavior, academics, and preparing for 3rd grade.  Hilary will be left with daily lesson plans and will be working closely with Joceyln Dubs and Mike Allie for the last 7 weeks of school.  She has come in a few times and has met our class and is excited to start!

Thank you all so much for all of your support and understanding.  I have had such a great time working and getting to know each of my students this year and I'm sad that I will not be finishing the year with them as we have many fun and exciting projects to come!

Sincerely,

Laura Kupper

2nd Grade Puppet Show

Parents please remember that your child's puppet show is

Thursday January 22 from 8:15-9:15am in the  1st Grade Pod!

Hope to see you there!

Sunday, January 4, 2015

I hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable winter break!

This trimester brings a lot of fun events for our second graders beginning with Ms. Gwen our puppeteer next Monday (1/12/15)!  Ms. Gwen will be working with our students for a little over a week creating their very own sock puppet!  Students will not only decorate their own puppet but they will also have a chance to use their creativity and imagination to bring their puppet to life in a special puppet show.

If you have any extra toilet paper rolls or paper towel rolls cut in half, we would greatly appreciate them as each second grader will need one to create their puppet.  The date and time of each class puppet show will be determined soon.

I look forward to seeing you all soon at our class puppet show!
